Great Restaurant with Excellent Dessert - Peanut Fry!

Friday night my boyfriend and I had dinner at Red Bar in Soho. I had been to the IFC location once for a work event, and had been meaning to try Red Bar in Soho for a proper dinner, and I'm SO glad I finally did. I ordered a steak and WIlliam had a salmon salad. Both dishes were entirely satisfactory, but forgettable.

What wasn't forgettable, however, was the fantastic dessert our server recommended. She called it "The Peanut Fry," and I at first had my doubts, but William insisted and I'm glad I consented. The Peanut Fry, which I'd heard about from a friend in the restaurant business, consisted of a perfectly roasted, wedge-shaped potato fry garnished with peanuts sauteed in a delicious sauce that blended the taste of peanut and potato, which I never would have thought to work so well together.

Anyway, William and I wholeheartedly recommend Red Bar for dinner. At least be sure to pop in after work for a cocktail and a Peanut Fry!

Amazing

I've been waiting for so long for a chilled, American restaurant in SoHo. After being out of Hong Kong for about 8 months, I returned to such a pleasant surprise, Red SoHo! We went up for the ladies night last Thursday, it was great, great quality Cosmos for a ladies night drink, and the pass around snacks just kept coming! The staff was so friendly, to such an extent that on my way out they offered me a bright red umbrella to shield me and my girls from the poring rain.

Disappointing "happy hour"

RED recently posted a sign advertising their happy hour with complimentary bar snacks - mini sliders, crab cakes, etc. - so Friday night some friends and I decided to give it a try. What a huge disappointment. We were there for three hours (and several drinks) and the only "complimentary snack" we got was a small spoonful of mediocre mac & cheese. I asked the waitress repeatedly where the advertised snacks were, and she kept saying "they are coming around." Well, we never saw them.

Finally we were starving enough to give in and order some appetizers off the menu. The falafel was so dry and tasteless that it was almost inedible. It's the only time that our group of four friends have ever been out drinking and left a dish unfinished. RED is all flash and glitter with little substance. None of us will be back.

Will not be going back to Red SoHo

This is one experience I would rather forget but thought I should at least share - to at least warn others who are thinking about dining here!

I went to Red on a Friday night and expecting a hustling, vibrant after work bar atmosphere like every other bar in SoHo on a Friday, I was disappointed to walk into an almost empty bar. There were about three staff to every drinker!!!!

After opting not to have a drink at the empty bar, my partner and I took a table on the window overlooking the mid levels escalator. This is a great outlook. The menu is expansive, but tries to be too many things at once - losing its appeal immediately.

My partner went for the spaghetti and meatballs whilst I had the American rib eye - being a New York restaurant I thought the steaks must be good. But how disappointing the steak was. I asked for my steak medium-rare and it came back well done. When I asked the waitstaff that this was not how I requested my steak be cooked, I was looked at with a blank stare and was told "I will see what the kitchen can do". What?!!!!

My steak then came back to me 30 mins later - well after my partner had finished the spaghetti and meatballs - and it was very ordinary. It was not tender at all, as you would expect from a Rib Eye, and it contained a lot of fat.

When the waitstaff came to clear my plate and asked how my meal was, I explained to her my displeasure at having been through this experience and was expecting to at least be offered a desert or drink on the house. Instead she said she would hope my next meal here would be good, at which I commented I would not be coming back...

Chill Chill Chill

The phenomenon around Soho is al fresco dinning and drinking.
But for a non-smoker like me. I prefer having my drinks indoor rather than sweating and suffer in the heat.

RED Soho has a wonderful bar area which is hidden at the back of the restaurant. The restaurant look modern, chic and it is a great place to hang out with friends and co-workers. (^__^)
