Great feast before Halloween!

Stopped in here on our way to LKF for Halloween and boy were we surprised by how good the middle eastern food was!

for only $130, I got a deliciously plentiful plate of chicken, beef and minced lamb kebabs with perfectly fluffy and light cous cous and sautéed eggplant.

It was gorgeous and man can I tell you, it is hard to find a good middle eastern restaurant in HK that's fair-priced! Highly recommend.

Inside the genie's lamp

Like others who have commented, I do find portions at Habibi to be a bit on the small side. However, having said that, that’s just the perfect excuse to order more different kinds of dishes to share with a group of friends! Their lamb, which turns out to be the most tender and succulent lamb I’ve ever tasted, however they make it, always impresses me. I’m not a big fan of their fish, but their other choices more than make up for it.

What I really enjoy about Habibi is that it’s always such a fun experience. The way that the restaurant is decorated is wonderful; it’s cozy and exotic at the same time, without feeling fake or pretentious. One thing that I absolutely loved on sight was the slanted mirror that is mounted on one side of their walls. I loved that even though I was there with a large party of people, the mirror made it possible for me to see my friends at the other end of the table.

I also really liked the alcoves they have for diners who prefer a more private setting to enjoy their meals. Although, having been in one of those alcoves, it does take a little extra waving and gesturing to catch the attention of their staff. Also, the way that the restaurant is lit up and all the colours made me feel like I was in a kaleidoscope-cave!

Overall, I really like going to Habibi for a night out with friends. It’s fun, the food is good, it’s not ridiculously expensive, and if you go on a Friday night, you can burn off some of the calories you consumed by joining in with the belly-dancer!

great lunch buffet

i have to agree that my experience of Habibi has ALWAYS been good and i eat there a lot. If you are worried about small portions then check out their lunch buffet. It's under HK$100 for the lite lunch and you can eat as much as you like including Saturdays. You can have really big portions if you try!!
The evenings are fun too as they have a belly dancer on Fri & Sat and even the egyptian wine is really good. The staff I have also found to be areally friendly, the chef will even make something special for you if you ask. Highly recommended.

Good Middle Eastern Food

Hong Kong suffers, inexplicably I might add, from having few Middle Eastern restaurants. Having eaten at most that the region has to offer I feel safe in saying that the quality of the food at Habibi is excellent. Very attentive waiters and the Owner/Manager was very friendly and obviously passionate about his restaurant and food.

If I did have anything negative to say, it would be that the portions are a bit on the stingy side, but two of us went there and had a few appetizers and then shared the mixed grill, and also had two wines, and the bill came out very reasonable - about HK$250 per person.

Habibi Soho?? >> Never again

Unlike Cloud_Strife I cannot recommend anyone to eat it that restaurant, and not only because the portions are ridiculously small.

Food is expensive, given the small portions (if you end up having to order 3 plates to have a normal meal, that will hit the 400 plus per person, plus the drinks, not to mention a tea carafe for two, priced at 66HK$.... yes!)

here is what happened to us early this year (2009) :
I ordered some hummus... the portion was so tiny that I rather don't even comment it.
Then the couscous arrived, with an even more tiny portion of harissa.
I tested it, it was very sweet, did not taste like harissa. I therefore asked kindly for some harissa...
To my surprise our waitress did not know what I was talking about.
After a while she asked me if I wanted to order some?
I said no, I think I can ask for some harrissa with my couscous, don't you think?
She then asked around, to finally tell me that that tiny little portion of red sweet thing was the harissa, but that I could order some more if I wanted??

What? yes, you have to pay to have some additional harrissa at habibi...

My couscous is the smallest couscous ever served to me in my life (I lived and worked in the ME for several years), with few chick peas, a tiny tiny amount of couscous, and a piece of lamb that was not really tasty, and that stupidity about the harissa.

My friend ordered egglant mussaca, and to their credit, I have to say that it was rather good, though served without harrissa (it is an obsession), >> plan to have to pay to get some, should you want some.

In short: too expensive, very small portions, poor service, unfriendly staff, scandalous price for a tea, and plan to have to pay for harissa... >>in my case=NEVER AGAIN

authenticity

When an Egyptian family member came to visit me here in HK, i made a point of taking him to Habibi, to get a reaction from someone with a lifetime of experience on middle eastern food.

He was hugely impressed by the variety of treats on offer and across the board found them to be very authentic. To my uneducated tongue, the food was both delicious and exciting.

I'm a big fan of finger food, breads and dips throughout meals and the ability to mix and match. Habibi is more than accommodating for this!

Portions aren't huge, occasionally feeling a little meagre - so ordering a couple of extra dishes is a good way to avoid the necessity to reorder. The food is well priced, so a substantial meal won't hurt the wallet:)
