Top 5 Splashes of White
With a penchant for white wine and a notion of locating a handful of affordable credit crunch compatible beverages, Spencer Blackwood Douglass ventured deep into the heart of SoHo with a pocketful of loose change and large measure of optimism...

A veritable treasure trove of wine for the connoisseur and casual consumer alike. I almost missed out on sampling the extensive list at this sophisticated bar located slightly off the beaten track, as the entrance way was discouragingly crowded when I passed the first time, but luckily had diminished upon my return. With a superior selection of wines by the glass from literally all over the world, you will be spoilt for choice. My personal recommendations are the rare Alsace Domaine Moltes, Pinot Blanc, Reserve AOC 2005 from France & the Gavi DOCG, Volpi, Piedmonte 2005 from Italy, as you will be unlikely to find them anywhere else by the glass in HK.

The exclusivity, elegant yet decadent décor along with their carefully selected wines by the glass make this an ideal destination. This is a great place to enjoy a rich full bodied Australian Chardonnay like the D’Arenberg Lucky Lizard, Chardonnay 2007 or perhaps if you are feeling like something a little lighter and more secretive, you might try the Gerard Bertrand, 6 Sens from the Languedoc in France.

This classy restaurant / wine bar bears more than a passing resemblance to it’s sister location Tivo and is a very enjoyable place to pass an evening. They have a rotating list of featured wines by the glass (in addition to their regular selection) and focus on educating customers to appreciate different flavours, this month you can choose from Sella & Mosca, La Cala, Vermentino from Italy and Louis Guntrum Riesling from Germany.

Although in terms of atmosphere this is not my first choice for a relaxed glass of chilled white, it is undeniably popular and as far as selection of wines by the glass goes, almost unbeatable. Choose at your leisure from Bodegas Muga, Rioja Blanco 2007 from Spain, Masi Levarie, Soave Classico DOC 2007 from Italy, Hunter Wines, Riesling 2007, Marlborough from Australia or Santa Rita, Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Maipo from Chile.

Finally the bright new blue and white bar whose look is based on the traditional villages of the Cycladic Islands, deserves special mention for it’s effort to import a wine directly from the Island of Santorini in the middle of the Aegean sea. The Santorini, Boutari from Greece has a distinctive flavour unlike the wines of France and Australia that most of us are more used to.

I'm going to go and drink all of the above listed glasses again!
