What is SoHo?

Before discussing and defining SoHo’s boundary I feel it’s quite essential to define SoHo itself. So what’s within our boundary? Other than a district which, if this website’s URL is correct, we’re all very fond of.

At the mention of SoHo, the first word that springs to this writer’s mind is ‘eclectic’. Well, the first adjective. The first series of words being ‘South of Hollywood Road’ but for now we’ll disregard geographic descriptions. SoHo is a place where pretty much anything goes and more importantly, can go from morning ‘til the wee small hours.

That’s not to suggest SoHo is a land of debauchery and mischief. Not at all. The aforementioned ‘anything’ really doesn’t include any of the illicit indulgences other areas in Hong Kong may offer. SoHo is diverse, but very safe. Falling closer to Peter Pan’s Neverland than the dark, occasionally frightening Wonderland that Alice strayed into.

SoHo’s ‘anything’ is defined by its community. On one end of the spectrum are uber-chic bars with their sumptuous cocktails and divine desserts. At the other, one-man businesses repairing umbrellas and polishing shoes out of makeshift shacks nestled between buildings and under trees. With such diversity, it’s no wonder that SoHo offers such an amazing variety of experiences.

So how has its border been defined until now? Everyone knows the core of SoHo, made obvious by the nightly masses spilling out onto the streets. But where does the periphery lie? Seemingly, it’s been a rather vague point of non-discussion.

In a city that’s constantly changing, seeing venues opening on an almost weekly basis, how does one determine the chosen few that are in and those unfortunate enough to miss the catchment area? The honest answer - we designed a website, needed to address the boundaries and decided against leaving people out.

Anybody within reason… LKF is LKF, and we aren’t in the business of poaching venues, but with a plethora of bars, restaurants and galleries opening between SoHo and other neighbouring hotspots, we felt it was only right to include them in our community.

So, back on point - where does the SoHo boundary lie? Spreading from the escalator like wildfire, SoHo now stretches from Mosque Street down to Wellington Street as well as reaching across Hollywood Road to Man Mo Temple and to the Centrium on Wyndham Street.

We scrutinized this for some time, but time and time again came back to a very simple point of not excluding anyone unnecessarily. In an area that is both eclectic and community driven it makes sense to invite anyone and everyone from the surrounding vicinity to get involved and join in the fun.

So old and new alike, welcome to SoHo! We love it here, and we hope you will too.

re: Soho boundaries

I can understand traditionalists following kevin's opinion to begin with, but thats pretty much always the case with something new. The area looks great to me and includes a lot of my favourite bars/restaurants that previously fell into no man's land. I hardly think including a few streets is going to hurt the mega-busy heart of soho. Surely it'll simply add to its publicity?

Soho Boundries

Applaud your idea of an "all inclusive" Soho but I'm uncomfortable with the whole rezoning thing with "Greater Soho".
Soho always used to be Staunton, Elgin, Shelly, Peel and the surrounding streets.
Gough Street (north of Hollywood - remember when they tried to brand it NoHo) is tenuous as a new member of the Soho set and Arbuthnot Road just doesnt seem right to my way of thinking - or indeed to many locals whom I have spoken to who have grown up in Soho.
I realise that a lot of this is for the commercial benefit of the website but restaurants will still have to advertise even if they are not in the thick of it. As a community we run the risk of spreading ourselves too thin and see the very essence of Soho being destroyed if we start to include strreets and buildings that are Mid-Levels (whether by design or location).
