Karin Weber
Tell me a bit about your background.
I'm originally from Germany. I worked in the antique business in London for 15 years and then got interested in paintings.
Why did you open a gallery in SoHo?
I wanted to be in close proximity to Central. Luckily, with the opening of the escalator in 1994, this area has gotten more and more busy and built up. Now SoHo has become a brand name associated with culture, wining and dining. It's the hottest spot in Hong Kong to have a gallery.
What sort of work do you represent?
We predominantly represent work from Asia and with the first exhibition in 1999, we are the first gallery in Hong Kong to showcase contemporary Burmese art.
How long has the gallery been here for?
The SoHo gallery has been here since 1997 but we first opened in Aberdeen in 1995.
How do you find your artists?
The first artist to showcase his work with us was Min Wae Aung from Burma whose paintings were a huge success and have now become world famous. Since Karin Weber Gallery is well-known and well-established, we receive enquiries and requests from all over the world from artists with an interest in displaying their work with us.
Do you think the art scene has changed much in recent years?
Yes. It has grown considerably. Four to five years ago there were about twenty galleries in the SoHo area and now there are around fifty. Demand for art is stronger than ever in Hong Kong with particular focus on Chinese contemporary art.
Do you have a dream artist you would love to represent?
Yes, an impressionist. Van Gogh would be my number one choice.
I don't know much about art. Do you have any art tips for a novice buyer?
It's simple really, buy what you like and what interests you.

Born and raised in Worcestershire, England, upon moving to Hong Kong Benjamin quickly found routine in and around SoHo, writing in it's cafés by day and nurturing a Tanqueray fuelled videogame addiction by night. Dabbling in a variety of written formats from corporate copywriting to comic and film scripts, he takes pleasure in blending a cocktail of engaging storylines with incisive language and a measure of wry English wit. Neither shaken nor stirred.
