The Monogamous Chinese
Nestled under the Central Escalator, between Elgin Street and Caine Road, The Monogamous Chinese is a Northern Chinese restaurant that specialises in reproducing authentic tongue-tingling Sichuan and Peking cuisine.
The ‘Monogamous,’ in the name refers to the chef’s expressed fidelity to using original recipes, passed down from generation to generation, which he lovingly recreates in his restaurant kitchen. The restaurant itself is only small, therefore suited to couples and smaller groups who will not doubt enjoy the cute retro-chic Chinese décor (think pop art meets The World of Suzie Wong).

But it’s the food that steals the show. Most of the dishes pack a mighty punch; lathered in chili oils and mountains of peppers (this is Sichuan, after all), the heat builds up as your meal progresses, so make sure your taste buds can take it.
Standout dishes include the Fried Black-Boned Chicken with Sichuan Chili and Peppers (delicious fried nugget of chicken, buried amongst piles of red hot chili peppers), Poached Sliced Beef in Hot Chili Oil (bursting with a spicy freshness and succulent beef) and our personal favourite, the Deep Fried Tofu with Crispy Garlic and Spicy Salt.

Their desserts offer a sweet respite from the prickling heat, so plump for the Crispy Candied Bananas or Ice Cream Soufflé Balls. Set Lunches are a good way to get a taste of their menu, offering a starter, a main course and a side dish (such as dumplings) all for $88.
Overall, The Monogamous Chinese is a good experience for fans of both spicy dining and Chinese food. Hidden away and removed from the main streets of SoHo, the intimate lighting and low-key vibe makes it an ideal place for couples – just makes sure your date can handle the heat.
